When it comes to a time loop story, there are movies that do well because they have more information as the movie progresses. The protagonist will try to fix his life at that time with the knowledge that he acquired as he grew up. However, once they realize that it was all a rite of passage for them to learn and become the person they will become, everything that happened doesn't matter.
The time loop can get tiring to watch, but sometimes it takes a fun cast and a good director to set a different tone than the generic gimmick. In One More Time, Amelia returns to 2002 and wants to relive how special it felt at 18. It was important to her to see what life was like before she got old and lost herself.
Director: Jonatan Etzler
Writers: Sofie Forsman, Tove Forsman, Mikael Ljung
Stars: Hedda Stiernstedt, Vanna Rosenberg, Miriam Ingrid
It's interesting to see these characters go back to a time when they thought they had it all and wanted to stay in that little world. As we get older, it's hard to accept that we can't go back to certain times and only have the memories to hold on to. Over the years, those memories may be skewed, but it's still something.
If you are a fan of 13 Going On 30, then this movie is perfect for you. It's a very cute and wholesome throwback to 2002 and millennials will appreciate the nostalgia. The important thing about films that use time loops is that they must recover the authenticity of the time and One More Time does it very well.
The only choice that is much appreciated is that of director Jonatan Etzler who presents adults as 18-year-olds, which makes more sense. They're playing teenagers who are having intimate moments, so since there wasn't a bond with themselves at 18, this really worked.
It is a lighthearted comedy that will definitely lift your spirits and make you appreciate the life you have now. It's important not to take time with people for granted, and the more Amelia relives the same day over and over again, the more she begins to preach to others.
Sometimes people need reminders of how great they are, and Amelia misses that so many people want her. The 40 year old me of hers doesn't understand how everything could go wrong for her and she wants to stay in this loop forever.
What really works in this movie is that it feels a lot like 2002 and the nostalgia is probably the best thing about it. From the fashion to the song choices, everything about it screams early 2000s. Going back to the 2002 fashion is probably the most fun because of the wild choices people would make. It was a completely different time and the younger generation seeing this can appreciate how fun and punk it was.
